Outsized is not the same as outmatched.

At Cannae in 216 BC, Hannibal’s much smaller force surrounded and destroyed a much larger Roman army by holding the center and closing on it from both sides. Our logo suggests that double envelopment.

Hannibal’s more nimble army, combined with innovative tactics, won the day. It is one of the most famous battles of the classical age.

Our founder is a lifelong student of history, and has long been fascinated by this battle. History explains how our world came to be — and, more practically, it builds the habit of understanding a situation thoroughly before acting on it, and of holding several points of view at once.
